August 2009 Thanks to strict new laws turning unauthorised migration into a criminal offence and a controversial deal with Libya, Italy is cracking down on immigration. Tough but necessary or just plain racist? Look at them - ugly mugs! a citizen patrol group is targeting immigrants. Groups like these are now legal and meant to help the police fight drug dealers. Some residents are sceptical: We should integrate those people, not hunt them down. But others welcome the new laws. No more Mr Nice guy, were fed up! Negative press has turned immigration into a devil in the publics eye but it seems Italians no longer need to fear: the government has closed the gateway to Europe. Libya is preventing migrants from leaving and Italy's pushing back boats intercepted near Lampedusa. The need for political asylum is not considered. Most drastically, doctors are now obliged to report migrants without documents to the authorities. I think it's a stupid law, says this MSF doctor, almost all of us will take no notice.

She is so besotted with music that her passion wins you over before you have even had the chance to listen to one of her songs. Nina comes from a small town in Val Trebbia which she left early on for Ireland, the US, anywhere her dreams would take her. Starting as a multi-faceted artist, with many musical ventures behind, Nina Zilli found time and passion to write songs about everything and to present herself as a solo singer. From her magical hat of wonders, Nina pulled out six songs and released an EP in 2009. It included 50mila, the debut single with Giuliano Palma picked by Ferzan Ozpetek for his film Mine Vaganti, and cult cover You Can't Hurry Love by the Supremes in Italian-- L'Amore Verrà. Nina Zilli debuted in Sanremo in 2010 with L'Uomo Che Amava Le Donne and won the 'Mia Martini' Critics' Award and the Press, Radio & TV Award as well as the Best Live Performance at the Newcomer's category. This latter award was assigned to Nina by "Assomusica" for her distinctive act, her excellent stage presence, her remarkable flair for performing live and a brilliant talent for interacting with the audience; all features that are crucial to transform live music into pure emotion. She then released her album Sempre Lontano, which was certified gold, and following a guest performance at the 2011 Sanremo Festival for a duet with La Crus, the new edition ...

October 2009 A Cargo Ship, sunk by a former Mafia boss, was recently found 20 kilometres off the coast of Cetraro in Italy. Inside the ship was 120 barrels of toxic waste. Was the Italian government involved? Francesco Fonti believes the government were working with the Mafia Boss. The ship was chartered by the Italian government to bring toxic waste back from Lebanon waste that had originally been transported there illegally by Italian companies. When Mafia bosses sunk the ship with the deadly toxic and radioactive waste inside, a government cover-up may have ensued. However this is only one of many ships sunk off the coast of Cetraro and many believe that side-effects are beginning to show. The authorities have launched an investigation into the unusually high numbers of tumours and other diseases in this area, reveals one conservationist.
