HM King George VI, broadcast speech to the British Empire from Buckingham Palace on September 3rd, 1939. During the 78rpm. Era several important speeches by the British Kings were recorded and published on 78rpm records, especially for very distant and isolated parts of the British Empire, where radio listening could be very troubled. This recording is the speech from September 3rd 1939, at the outbreak of WW2.

GEORG OTS (19201975) a legendary baritone, the most well-known and beloved singer in Estonia is one of the few artists that can impress even people who have never seen his live-performances. Georg Ots was the soloist of the Estonian National Opera from 1945 till 1975 but he also sang all over the former Soviet Union. He was the first Estonian singer to perform on the stage of the Bolshoi Opera in Moscow (as Eugen Onegin in 1964, at a performance where Tatyana was sung by the legendary soprano Galina Vishnevskaya). Ots sang with equal success both opera (eg don Giovanni, Papageno in The Magic Flute, Demon, Iago in Othello, Rigoletto, Germont in La Traviata), operetta (Danilo in Die lustige Witwe, Mr X in Die Zirkusprinzessin etc) and musical (Fred Graham in Kiss Me, Kate and Cervantes / don Quijote in Man of La Mancha) as well as chamber music and even popular songs of his era. In the last years of his life Georg Ots suffered from cancer but between the operations still appeared on stage. This video is his last performance before the wide audience. It is recorded at the Estonian Television in January 1975. The song of Pali Racz from the operetta by Imre Kalman Der Zigeunerprimas has a significant symbolic meaning here the old gypsy remembers his youth, love and happy days in the past. The orchestra of the Estonian Television and Radio is conducted by Peeter Saul.

The Estonian baritone Georg Karlovich Ots (1920-1975) was undoubtedly one of the most successful and popular operatic singers of the post-World War II era Soviet Union. A graduate of the Tallinn State Conservatory in 1951, Ots gained early renown for his versatility, being as much at home in Russian and Estonian popular songs, folk songs, and operetta as he was in the operatic world. His fame spread rapidly after 1957, when he portrayed the title role in the Lenfilm movie "Mister X", based on Imre Kalman's operetta "Die Zirkusprinzessin". While he toured widely in the Soviet Union and was a frequent guest at the Bolshoi Theater, Ots nevertheless remained a regular at the Estonian National Theater until his untimely death in 1975. Ots' voice was essentially a lyric instrument, not large, but the timbre was extraordinarily soft-grained, warm, and smooth- very caressing to the ear. The sound is quite distinct; you'll never mistake him for any other singer. Among his many operetta recordings, Pali Racz's gorgeous 1st act aria from Imre Kalman's operetta "Der Zigeunerprimas" is a particular favorite of mine. Racz, an aging gypsy violin virtuoso, realizes that his best days are behind him and fears that his traditional style of playing is dying off. Ots sings in his native Estonian, and while it's hardly the most musical of languages (like its close relative Finnish), that matters little in light of the singing.
